Künstlerresidenzen sind heute entscheidende Impulsgeber für kreative Prozesse. Sie fördern die Zusammenarbeit über kulturelle Grenzen hinweg und regen dazu an, neue Denk- und Handlungsräume zu erschließen. Mit ihren räumlichen und finanziellen Ressourcen ermöglichen sie es Künstler*innen, dem Alltag zu entkommen und sich mit Konzentration und Freiheit ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit zu widmen. So fungieren sie als Beschleuniger kreativer Prozesse.
Die Ausstellung „Want to Stay Where I Have Never Been“ zeigt den Zusammenschluss dieser lokal organisierten Residencies und ihrer internationalen Akteur*innen und schafft somit ein “Supernetzwerk”, das sich von Deutschland über den Alpenraum, Süditalien, Namibia und Mosambik bis in den Libanon und nach Südkorea erstreckt.
Zur performativen Ausstellungseröffnung am 9. Mai 2025 um 19 Uhr sprechen Stadtrat David Süß in Vertretung des Oberbürgermeisters sowie Nina Oswald, Leiterin der Bildenden Kunst im Kulturreferat München.
Unterstützt durch die Verbindungslinien des BBK Bayern (aus Mitteln des Bayerischen Staatsministeriums für Wissenschaft und Kunst), die Erwin und Gisela von Steiner-Stiftung und das Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München. Es findet statt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Residenzprogramm der Landeshauptstadt München / Ebenböckhaus.

The hidden Munich roots of three non-institutional artist residencies

Opening hours: Tue - Sat 1 pm - 7 pm, Sun 11 am - 7 pm.
Exchange programs for artists have a long tradition. The opportunity to live and work in a foreign place for a certain period of time has lost none of its fascination. The Rathausgalerie brings together three artist residencies initiated by Munich artists: AlmResidency, Jet Leg and LongegaProject. The exhibition focuses on collective collaboration, international exchange and the crossing of borders.
A modular “installation on wheels” will be created. The exhibition will be accompanied by events and art mediation programmes in German, German Sign Language and English.
With city-wide activities Want to stay where I have never been enters the public space. Three flags by artists who are unable to take part in the project in person will be displayed on the façade of the Department of Arts and Culture at Burgstraße 4.

as well as international guest artists: Hyeyoung Ku, Irene Macalli and Thandi Pinto, who are taking part in the residency program at the Ebenböckhaus of the City of Munich;
also invited are: Shaqa Bovand, the artist duo “Laumkon”, Maria Mbereshu, Rebecca Moccia and Matteo Pizzolante.
At the performative opening of the exhibition on May 9, 2025, 7 pm, City Councilor David Süß, on behalf of the Lord Mayor, and Nina Oswald, Department of Arts and Culture, will speak.
The event will be translated into German sign language.
Admission to the exhibition and participation in the programs are free.
The project is supported by Verbindungslinien des BBK Bayern (with funds from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts), the Erwin and Gisela von Steiner Foundation, the Cultural Department of the City of Munich and Coordination office for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Munich. It takes place in cooperation with the City of Munich’s artist-in-residence program / Ebenböckhaus.
